Ten

Stella had always hated Ikea, so it was difficult to tell if the sick, dizzy sensation that seemed to be taking over her body was due to feeling trapped in that exceedingly bright, never-ending Swedish store, or simply the fact that she was officially six months pregnant. She slammed her eyes closed and covered her belly for several moments. Digging her fingers into her white sundress when the dizziness took it’s sweet time to subside, she only opened her eyes when her body felt steady once more.

Her eyes moved down to Blue, who was staring intently up at her as if she instinctively knew her mom had been seconds from sending both of them collapsing to the ground.

“That was a close one,” Stella smiled, kissing Blue’s forehead, causing her blue eyes to light up as a gummy smile crossed her face. “She does make me a little dizzy, but nowhere near as sick as you did, Blue.”

Blue’s smile brightened, apparently swelling with pride at what a hard time she’d given Stella during her 9-month tenure in her stomach.

“She was definitely more of a surprise than you were, though. Or perhaps I should say ‘he’ was more of a surprise since we don’t know the sex yet. It does seem to be the men in my life who love to pull the rug out from under me, though. Rarely the women. Well, if you don’t count your Aunt DJ that is.” Stella rambled on as she moved through the colorful flower section, running her fingers absently over everything she saw. “She’s been threatening to tell your daddy the truth about me and Papa Rock for months now, but still hasn’t followed through. Sometimes I wonder if she enjoys seeing me squirm. It’s like I don’t even know her anymore. Just like your Daddy.” Stella looked down at Blue again, who was still watching her. “And I guess you’re officially my therapist now.”

Blue laid her head on Stella’s shoulder, popping her thumb in her mouth.

“Aw…” Stella laid her head on Blue’s too, eyes fluttering shut. “I won’t bore you with my issues anymore. Toys. Potty training. Sippy cups. That should be the extent of the stress you have to endure in your life…” She hummed softly to Blue as she continued through the isle. “What do you think, Blue? Would you want a baby brother or a baby sister?”

Blue’s head shot up, making Stella wonder—the way she often did—if her baby girl could actually understand her. If the incredulous look in Blue’s eyes was any indication, coupled with the confused grunt that followed, her answer to Stella’s question was a resounding ‘neither.’

Stella breathed out a laugh. “Guess you’re just as excited about our new addition as your daddy.” Her eyes flew across the store to Troy. He was busy testing out every couch on display, plopping down on each one and wiggling his butt with a determined frown. “Finally told him last night. Might as well have told him that the garbage disposal was broken, since he would’ve probably given me the same non-reaction.
